LAHORE: Shehzad Roy won the Viewers’ Choice Award for the highly contested best male singer category in a ceremony held on 24th of June in Lahore. Beating heavyweights Ali Azmat (Junoon), Ali Zafar, Najam Shiraz, and Fakhir - each a tough rival in his own right. Shehzad Roy bagged the award on this pleasant summer evening.

The Viewers’ Choice Award 2004 was held in the architectural wonder Alhamra Hall - which is the center point of the cultural and theatrical festivities in Lahore. The evening was attended by music industry executives, artistes, and those who had contributed towards creating this glamorous awards ceremony a success. The Awards chose the best talent of the country based on the votes of those who matter most: the viewers.

Shehzad Roy’s acceptance speech was reminiscent of the moment when Imran Khan received the Cricket World Cup in 1992. After humbly accepting the award, Roy spoke passionately about Zindagi Trust, the non-profit organisation founded by him for the purpose of spreading education to the deprived. He spoke about the schools currently operated by Zindagi and of the future plans of the organisation. The audience warmly applauded the intense expression of Roy’s feelings about the unfortunate and his goal of making their lives better.

One wonders whether Shehzad’s association with his cause was what made him dearer to the viewers. After all, humanity and dedication are the defining qualities of a role model for the people, even if he is a music celebrity-PR
